The growth of Glasgow and the subsequent need for unpolluted water for both human and industrial consumption, resulted in the decision to build an aqueduct to provide water to the city. Loch Katrine was chosen to be the source of the supply. The Glasgow Corporation Loch Katrine waterworks scheme was inaugurated by Queen Victoria on the 14 October 1859. By 1883 an additional supply from Loch Katrine was needed due to the increased consumption of water by the city. An additional aqueduct was constructed in 1885. The new system, measuring 23.5 miles in length, was officially opened on 21st June 1901.

Loch Katrine aqueduct, Loch Chon aqueduct bridge 3 (Mulle Id=68): This carries the Loch Katrine water over a burn that empties into Loch Chon. The aqueduct dates from the first phase of the waterworks (1850s) and has 13-bays measuring 1.37m (4ft 6-inches) in width. Its railings have been replaced recently. There is a sluice which is marked 'B3G'. On a Scottish Water No.1 Blairhulachan Contract, plan 00036, a 16-bay version of the bridge is depicted.

Information from Jelle Muylle, engineer carrying out a survey of all structures relating to the Glasgow Corporation Loch Katrine Waterworks Scheme, 2006.
