NLO: Dunnet Head [name: ND 203 768]

Dunnet Bay [name centred ND 198 704]

Pentland Firth [name centred ND 35 81].

Possibly on map sheets or ND27SW.

Wick, 7th July. Part of a writing-desk - inside in a drawer a blank bill of lading in the Danish language, and a receipt form W. Johnston to Captain Twatt for £4 10s on account of Captain Anderson Faroe, dated Lerwick, April 2, 1858: also a head-board with 'ZAMBIA' (with a square) painted thereon, 5 --- picked up on Dunnet Sands (Dunnet Head).

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 13,813, London, Monday July 12 1858.

NMRS, MS/829/72 (no. 9527).

(No classification or cargo specified: date of loss cited as 5 July 1858). Zambia (possible name): this vessel stranded in Orkney, Pentland firth.

(Location of loss cited as N58 40.0 W3 10.0).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The map sheet and quasi-administrative area assigned to this record are essentially arbitrary, being derived from the reported location of discovery of wreckage. The vessel may have been lost on either side of the Pentland Firth.

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. Dunnet Sands are not noted as such on the 1999 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map, but the name may be taken to apply to the extensive sands that extend from ND 216 709 to ND 204 683, around the SE side of Dunnet Bay.
