NLO: Island of Stroma [name: ND 35 77]

Pentland Firth [name centred ND 35 81].

St. Margaret's Hope, (Orkney), 8th Jan. The SOVEREIGN (s), from Thurso, bound South, put into Widewall Bay, yesterday, through stress of weather, and reports in passing the Island of Stroma (Pentland Frith) saw a vessel on shore on the East side, with her head lying SW, and nothing but mainmast standing, supposed to be either a brig or schooner.

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 13,664, London, Monday January 18 1858.

NMRS, MS/829/72 (no. 9454).

(Classified as brig or schooner: no cargo specified, but date date [of report] cited as 8 January 1858). Unknown: this vessel stranded on the E side of Stroma, her head lying towards the SW.

(Location of loss cited as N58 41.0 W3 6.0)..

I G Whittaker 1998.

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. The date cited by Whittaker is presumably that of report, rather than of the original stranding.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 26 October 2006.
