Field Visit (June 1981)
Hooan HY 4366 4313 HY44SW
The rounded knoll occupied by the abandoned farmstead of Hooan is locally believed to be artificial. While it is hard to distinguish it from the natural relief, it nonetheless could well be a settlement-mound.
RCAHMS 1983, visited June 1981.

Trial Trench (February 2014)
HY 4366 4313 A trial trenching evaluation was undertaken in February 2014 in advance of proposed development. The site consists of a series of ruinous 19th- to early 20th-century croft buildings and surrounding garden ground. The buildings occupy a mound of unknown origin in which shelly midden was exposed. The investigation determined that the knoll was
natural in origin. Traces of dry stone walling was uncovered below ground level in one trench; this extended beneath the standing buildings and may relate to an earlier phase of the croft.
