NLO: Thurso [name: ND 115 685]

Thurso Bay [name centred ND 117 699]

Pentland Firth [name centred ND 35 81].

Thurso, 2nd Mar. Large quantities of American deals, planks, and logs, are coming ashore along the coast, with part of the deck, mast, and name-board of a vessel, with 'LEANDER' cut in the wood. She appears to have been fir-built, and, it is conjectured, had struck on Seal Skerries.

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 11,841, London, Friday March 5 1852.

NMRS, MS/829/72 (no. 8774).

(Classified as brigantine, with cargo of timber: date of loss cited as 2 March 1852). Leander (possible name): much wreckage and cargo washed ashore along with Leander headboard near Thurso.

Registration: London. Built 1849. 173nrt.

(Location of loss cited as N58 36.0 W3 31.5).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The map sheet and quasi-administrative area assigned to this record are essentially arbitrary, Thurso being the port of report. The 1999 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map notes neither Seal Skerry nor Seal Skerries near Thurso, and the vessel was possibly lost on Seal Skerry [name: HY 782 568] off North Ronaldsay [name: HY 75 54], Orkney. The vessel may alternatively have foundered out at sea, possibly beyond Scottish waters.

The classification cited by Whittaker remains unconfirmed.
