Archaeology Notes

NC03SW 8003 unlocated

NLO: Point of Stoer [name: NC 022 356].

Ullapool, 24th Oct. The REBECCA & ELIZA, Garratt, of and for Newcastle, from Arklow, sprang a leak off Rea Head, and settled down in 40 fathoms water, on the 22nd, off Stoer Head [Point of Stoer].

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 11,730, London, Monday October 27 1851.

NMRS, MS/829/72 (no. 8703).

The map sheet and quasi-administrative area assigned to this record are essentially arbitrary. Point of Stoer lighthouse (NC03SW 6) is at NC 0037 3296, but the location of Rea Head cannot be determined from the available map evidence.

The loss of this is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998).

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 20 September 2006.
