Pier [NAT]

OS (GIS) AIB, June 2006.

This L-shaped pier and its beacon (HY44NW 45.04) are evidently of new construction. Both are depicted and noted on the current edition of the OS (GIS) AIB, but are not indicated on the 1977 edition of the OS 1:10,000 map.

Together with the older pier (HY44NW 45.00), this pier forms what is in effect a harbour, the jetty HY44NW 45.02 being situated between them.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 7 July 2006.

Activities

Underwater Archaeology

HY 44544 48895 A programme of work was undertaken in 2017

prior to a planned pier extension. A desk-based assessment of

four wreck sites in the general area of Pierowall Bay and nine

other sites within 0.5km of the pier was carried out. A field

survey (diver) identified no visual evidence for submerged

material of archaeological or historical significance.
