Archaeology Notes (1911)

NO12NW 47 c. 146 299.

A cup and ring stone (illustrated by Scott) was 'quite recently' dug up in a field on South Friarton farm. It now lies by the side of the field in which it was found. Although part of it has been broken off, and some of the marks erased, there are still thirteen distinct cup-marks, two surrounded by rings, with a channel running in a straight line towards one end.

Field Visit (18 June 1989)

Scott notes a cup-and-ring marked boulder which had been ploughed-up in one of the fields of South Friarton a little before 1911. He states that the boulder bore thirteen distinct cupmarks, two of which were ringed, and there was also a straight length of channel which ran towards one end. This description seems to contradict a sketch shown by Scott, which indicates only ten cupmarks at least eight of which are ringed. No trace of this boulder could be found beside any of the fields of South Friarton.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS) 18 June 1989.
