Formally commencing at the end of 2003, a survey of Glen Tanar Estate is being carried out within both the main survey area and, to a more limited extent, within neighbouring areas on Deeside and in the upper Angus glens. A desk-based assessment and field survey have been undertaken. Of the 142 sites so far recorded by other researchers, 110 have now been checked in the field. A further 480 database entries have been made, from which 100 new sites have been reported during 2005. These include roundhouses, clearance cairns, shieling huts and pens, farmsteads, possible whisky still sites, and inscribed stones dating from the late 19th century. Over the next 12 months it is intended to continue with prospective survey in the field, to pursue historical research, to plan township and shieling sites, and to commence recording of standing buildings, initially photographically.
