Archaeology Notes

NT82SW 290 from 8392 2088 to 8425 2040

An extensive area of contour cultivation, measuring 570m from NW to SE by up to 120m, covers the moderate to steep W-facing slopes of a prominent spur on the S side of Hairny Law, overlooking the Sourhope Sike. A further area of contour cultivation (NT82SW 37), which continues around the nose of the spur and back along the reverse slope overlooking the Sourhope Burn, is possibly part of the same system. The upper limit of the cultivation is generally undefined, except for a later linear feature towards the N end, but the lower limit is marked by the public footpath and modern fence line. In the centre of the area much of the cultivation has been destroyed by cross-contour rig (NT82SW 291). The cultivation, which is clearest on the more moderate slopes, averages 3m in width and stands up to 0.3m in height.
