Archaeology Notes

NT82SW 155 8267 2323 to 8266 8285

An area of contour cultivation, measuring 200m from NNW to SSE by 320m, occupies the moderately steep to steep slope of a W-facing spur overlooking the head of the Butter Sike on the S side of Shoulder Hill. The lower limit of cultivation is bounded by the upper extent of an area of cross-contour cultivation (NT82SW 161) whilst the Butter Burn defines the W extent. The upper limit of the cultivation is marked by the watershed with the Elghope Burn, the reverse slope of which is covered by a further extensive area of contour cultivation. On the E, the cultivation fades out between 50m and 100m to the W of a further area of contour cultivation (NT82SW 156). The cultivation measures about 4m in width ranges from 0.15m to 0.7m in height.
