Archaeology Notes

NY27SW 39.03 centred 22606 70368

A dispersed domestic site is situated at Creca, about 600m NE of the airfield. The largest proportion of the site is on the S side of the minor road that runs through the village.

Some elements of the camp survive in an area annotated as 'Creca Camp' on the OS 1:10000 scale map (1975).

The camp is visible on RAF WW II vertical air photographs (FNO 158, 6.39-6.40, flown 26 September 1942) and a postwar sortie (106G/Scot/UK 40, 3067-3068, flown 4 May 1946) which show that there were at least seventeen buildings and huts with twenty emergency air-raid shelters. Also visible on the air photographs is a gas decontamination centre at c.NY 2184 6904, which has since been demolished.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), April 2006

Only a few of the huts survive of the airfield domestic site and are visible on oblique aerial views taken in April 2010. Two small groups of huts, either side of the road are visible on the photographs along with several individual buildings or huts. Much of the former 'camp' area would now appear to be in use as small industiral units, with the village situated on either side oof the road to the SE.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), April 2010
