Abercromby Jetty [NAT]

OS (GIS) AIB, April 2006.

This jetty, or catch pier, was erected in 1789 as part of a series of harbour improvements being carried out around that time. It was intended to prevents waves racing up the navigation channel when generated by the interaction of the (new) North Pier (NJ90NE 7.02) on heavy E swells. It was named after the then Provost, John Abercrombie (1729-1820), but proved to be a significant danger to navigation itself, and was largely removed. Only a small portion of it remains, at the foot of the North Pier and next to the Roundhouse (NJ90NE 7.15). A craved stone commemorating John Abercrombie can be seen at the base of the jetty.

Aberdeen City Council [2006].
