Archaeology Notes

NX15SW 22.05 11578 54142

A pillbox has been identified from vertical air photographs (106G/Scot/UK 42, 3127-3128, flown 4 May 1946), about 473m SE of the row of Bellman type aircraft hangars within the technical site (NX15SW 22.01).

The pillbox visible on the photographs, possibly a type 22, is surrounded by a barbed-wire fence and is defending the approach from the coast.

The structure is depicted on the current OS 1:1500 scale digital map, but is not visible on vertical air photographs taken in 1988 (All Scotland Survey [Jasair], 24 88 038-039, flown 11 June 1988), suggesting that it has been demolished.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), April

The pillbox is visible on oblique aerial photographs taken by Solway Heritage in 1998.

Information from A Nicholson, Dumfries and Galloway SMR via e-mail to RCAHMS, 26 April 2007
