Archaeology Notes

NT82SW 94 from 81827 24853 to 81828 24741

Contour cultivation, or cultivation terraces, occupy the steep to very steep WNW-facing slopes of Wood Hill immediately NW of the summit. The cultivation covers an area, measuring 240m from NE to SW by 165m, to the N of an old quarry and bounded on the NW by the modern field wall E of Woodside Farm. Towards the NE, the terraces narrow and gradually fade out before an unnamed burn which runs into the Bowmont Water whilst, on the S, they cannot be traced beyond the spoil from the quarry and natural scree. Typically, the terraces range from 2m to 3.5m in width and stand to between 0.5m and 1m in height though they become wider and higher downslope and the best preserved examples indicate internal stressing.
