Archaeology Notes

NX06SE 105.02 centred 0725 6072

A large World War II military accommodation camp was situated in an area between Ladies Walk and Mcmaster Road and N of the London Road, a site now occupied by Stranraer Academy and a new housing estate at Eastwood Avenue. Nothing remains of the large numbers of huts formerly sited in this area.

The camp is visible on vertical air photographs (106G/Scot/UK 41, 3305-3306, flown 4 May 1946), which show that there were at least 131 huts mainly of the Nissen type spread over an area of about 23.20 hectares.
