Archaeology Notes

NX06NE 11.12 06192 68818

A large saw-toothed roof shed known as the 'North Transit Shed is visble on vertical air photographs (106G/Scot/UK 987, 3135-3136, flown 9 November 1945), on the northern part of what was Port Number Two, Cairnryan.

The shed and building to the N has been removed and a house annotated 'Burnfoot Cottage' with a 'cemetery on the OS 1:2500 scale digital map now stands on the site.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), March 2006

The second paragraph noted above is incorrect as the North Transit Shed stood about 100m S of 'Burnfoot Cottage' and the 'cemetery'. The church (NX06NE 23.00) was demolished in 1990 (information from A Nicholson SMR Officer Dumfries and Galloway). The concrete base of the shed is shown on the current OS digital maps.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), September 2008; Information via e-mail to RCAHMS A Nicholson, SMR Officer Dumfries and Galloway Council, 24 September 2008
