HY44NW 4 centred 4291 4824.
Centred at HY 4291 4824, on the Loch of Burness, is a peninsula which appears at one time to have been an island. There is a local tradition of 'Picts' houses' here and the level, turf-covered top measuring c.34.0m N-S by c.27.0m transversely, now occupied in the N by a plantycrub, shows traces of much older occupation. This, together with the name 'Burness', suggest that it has almost certainly been a place of ancient occupation, but the remains are too amorphous for classification.
Visited by OS 27 June 1970.
Field Visit (July 1981)
Gently-contoured turf-covered peninsula, showing no sign of
occupation other than a few large stones protruding through the
turf, but the peninsual itself is probably artificial.
Information from Orkney SMR (RGL) Jun 81.
Aerial photograph CPE/Scot/UK 280 3377 shows definite evidence of structures on the peninsula

Field Visit (June 1981)
Burness HY 4291 4824 HY44NW 4
The grass-covered peninsula in the loch immediately S of Burness farm is traditionally the site of 'picts'-houses'; it shows no traces of occupation, but the peninsula itself seems at least partly artificial.
RCAHMS 1983, visited June 1981.
