(NO 1927 1711) Roman Coins found (NAT)

OS 6" map, (1959).

Medieval Coin Hoard found AD 1820 (NAT).

OS 6" map, (1970).

About 200 coins (Name Book 1860; A Small 1823) were discovered in a jar in 1820. They were mainly of silver but 12 or 14 were of gold, and were of two sizes. The Name Book (1860) states that they were Roman, but Small who inspected them states that they were Scottish, probably of Robert II (1371-90), and minted in Edinburgh and Perth. They were in a very fine state of preservation.

Part of the hoard is in the possession of J H Patterson of Mugdrum (Name Book 1860), but at one time they were all in the possession of Sir David Moncrieff, (A Small 1823) and the remainder may be the coins donated by him to the Perth Museum (Perth Liter Antiq Soc 1827) on Dec. 2nd 1824, which are described as being of Robert II and III.

Name Book 1860; A Small 1823; Perth Liter Antiq Soc 1827.

'Roman coins were found between the properties of Balgonie and Netherfield....'

D Butler 1897.

(This is a reference to the medieval coin hoard found at Balgonie, originally published on OS maps as 'Roman coins' - see NO11NE 14).

(Undated) information from NMRS record card).

(Formerly also numbered as NO11NE 89). Four medieval coins (one of them of Robert I and three of Robert III) are held in Perth Museum and Art Gallery under accession numbers PMAG: 430, 432, 449 and 450, respectively. They were donated to the museum by Sir David Moncrieffe in 1824 and may have formed part of the hoard of coins found at Balgonie.

Information from RCAHMS (JRS), 3 February 1997.
