A pre-Reformation chapel was established in Gateside. The tradition of the neighbourhood still keeps the name alive. Mr W Gilmour, an elderly gentleman, pointed out the site (no siting symbol shown on OS 6" 1854) from what he had heard his father and grandfather say on the subject. The village of Gateside was formerly called the Chapelton of the Virgin, which is in favour of there having been a chapel here. On an old manuscript plan, a chapel was marked in Gateside, written 'St Mary's of Gytside'.
Chapel Well: A small spring well on the N side of the mill dam, supposed to have been used in the days of popery as holy water and for other purposes when the building supposed to have been St Mary's Chapel was in existence.

A chapel was erected at Gateside by the monks of Balmerino Abbey; it was known as 'Sanct Mary's of Dungaitsyde'.

The sites fall in a pasture field. No trace of building foundations, or a spring, was found.
