This reservoir is the fourth largest supply of domestic and industrial water in Scotland, supplying E Stirlingshire and SE Loch Lomondside. It was built in 1939, and is unusual in that it straddles both sides of the Endrick-Carron watershed, requiring a dam at each end.

This reservoir has been formed by damming the headwaters of the Endrick Water (to the W) and the River Carron (to the E). It straddles the boundaries between the parishes of St Ninians (to the N), Fintry (to the W) and Kilsyth (to the S).
