Archaeology Notes

NN59SE 68 5892 9089 to 5894 9096

The remains of a light-gauge railway were recorded during a detailed archaeological survey of Strathmashie Community Forest near Laggan, Highland. The railway was built and used by the Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit who worked in the forest during World War 2. The remains here consist of 2 parallel lines of timbers lying horizontally on the ground. There are occasional iron nails and the timbers are spaced at 1m apart. The survey was carried out to assess the evidence for past human use and to ascertain whether there was enough archaeology to develop a heritage trail in the forest.

At NN 5890 9085 is a section of iron rail that would have come from the railway, but is now not in situ.

D Sneddon 2005.
