Longhope, 17th Nov. The smack MAGGY LAUDER, from Wick, in attempting to turn into East Hope 15th inst., missed stays, went on shore, & became a total wreck: crew saved.

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 10,512, London, Thursday November 25 1847.

Island of Benbicala [Benbecula], 18th Nov. The MAGGIE LAUDER, (schr.), of Coleraine, from Bristol to Wick, went on shore on the Island of Stroma, 22nd inst.: crew saved. [Record received incomplete].

NMRS, MS/829/72 (no. 8241).

(Classified as schooner, with cargo of wood and iron hoops: date of loss cited as 24 November 1847). Maggie Lauder: this vessel was wrecked on Stroma. Registration: Colraine [Coleraine].

(Location of loss cited as N58 48.5 W3 10.0).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. The available evidence being inconsistent, a location on Stroma is preferred for this stranding. The location of East Hope cannot be determined from the available map evidence, while Longhope was apparently the port of report rather than the location of loss.

The classification cited by Whittaker is at variance with that cited in the first account; the cargo that he cites remains unverified. The Spelling 'Maggie Lauder' is preferred for the name.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 24 April 2007.
