Archaeology Notes

NN58NE 26 5658 8964

Some unidentified remains, thought to be left by the Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit, who worked here during WWII, were recorded here during a detailed archaeological survey of Strathmashie Community Forest near Laggan, Highland. The survey was carried out to assess the evidence for past human use and to ascertain whether there was enough archaeology to develop a heritage trail in the forest. There is a circular drum, 1.2m in diameter and 0.4m in width. It has a hole in the centre for an axle. It is possibly part of a winch or wheel associated with the Unit's work.
