The remains of a light gauge railway were recorded here during a detailed archaeological survey of Strathmashie Community Forest near Laggan, Highland. The survey was carried out to assess the evidence for past human use and to ascertain whether there was enough archaeology to develop a heritage trail in the forest.
The railway was created to transport timber by the Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit, who had a large prescence in the forest during WWII. The remains consist of sections of 2m-wide timbers laid parallel at 1.9m to 2m intervals, with some nails sticking out. Sections of iron rails remain in places.
