This reservoir was formed by damming the headwaters of the River Spean, in upper Glen Spean, and to provide water power for the Fort William [Foyers] aluminium works [NH42SE 4.00], opened in 1934. The associated dam (Laggan Dam: NN38SE 7) is at NN 37241 80786, at the SW end of the elongated glacial trough. The main inflow is at the NE end, at NN 535 895, near Kinloch Laggan, and a narrowing from the S side between Luiblea [name: NN 4339 8266] and Moy Lodge [name: NN 4412 8350] almost bisects it.

The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. The reservoir extends across portions of map sheets NN38SE, NN48NE, NN48SW, and NN58NW. The SW part of the loch falls within the parish of Kilmonivaig.
