The dam was built as an element of stage II of the Galloway Hydro-electric Scheme. Together with the aqueduct NX59NE 25, it serves to control the distribution of water between the Loch Doon Reservoir (NX49NE 20) and the Water of Deugh, into which the Bow Burn flows at NX 554 977.
