Stornaway [Stornoway], 4th April [1845]. 'The ship reported as having been towed into the Sound of Scarp 24th ult., water-logged and dismasted, became a total wreck during the heavy gales of the 26th and 28th; she was built of pine and black birch, had a yellow streak with painted ports, and her breadth was about 26 feet, and depth 18 feet; a considerable portion of the cargo, consisting of deals and battens, some of the deals marked on the ends 'T.P.' with black paint, & 'W.P.', and a few West India staves, have been saved.' [Record received incomplete].
NMRS, MS/829/71 (no. 7956).
The map sheet and quasi-administrative area assigned to this record are arbitrary, being derived solely from the port of report. The location of the Sound of Scarp (or possibly Scarpa) cannot be established from the available map evidence.
The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998).
Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 6 October 2005.
(Re-entered as NA91SE 8003). The above entry is incorrect: the extensive island of Scarp is centred around NA 970 150, while Caolas an Scarp separates this island from Harris (to the SE), being centred around NA 988 128.
Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 14 November 2006.
