Excavation (2005)

NO22NE 78 2717 2570

An excavation was carried out at this location ahead of a proposed development. The site comprises a cultivated field and derelict ground, formerly part of the wartime Errol Airfield. Fifteen trenches were excavated across the site and a number of features were found. A series of ceramic field drains, a watercourse with some medieval pottery sherds and areas of rig-and-furrow cultivation were all recorded. The areas of rig-and-furrow may have been part of the monastic grange, and finds show that the land was manured in the medieval period. It is likely the monks filled in and diverted the water course as part of improvements to the land. Areas where the airfield was located have largely had any earlier features destroyed by this wartime work.

D Perry 2005.

Note (24 June 2022)

A large military camp, comprising twenty-four building, one Stanton type air shelter and twelve blast shelters are depicted on the OS 1:2500 map (1967). The area is now redeveloped for housing as shown on the current edition of OS MasterMap.
