NLO: Strathy Point [name: NC 827 699]

Thurso [name: ND 115 687]

Pentland Firth [name centred ND 35 81].

Thurso, 13th May. 'The mainmast and foremast of a brig, with sails attached, and other wreck, has been washed on shore on Strathy Point, 30 miles West of this.'

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 7862, London, Monday May 20 1839.

NMRS, MS/829/71 (no. 7471).

(No classification or cargo specified: date cited as 13 May 1839). Unknown: mast and wreckage at Strathy Point.

(Location cited as N58 36.0 W4 1.0).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The location, map sheet and quasi-administrative area assigned to this record are arbitrary, being derived from the location of discovery of wreckage. It remains unclear whether or not this wreckage represents the loss of a vessel, or is simply a fallen mast. If lost, the vessel presumably foundered out at sea, possibly beyond Scottish waters.

The date cited by Whittaker is presumably that of report, rather than loss.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 7 September 2005.
