Archaeology Notes

HY31NE 39 370 170 (centre)

A desk-based assessment and walkover survey were undertaken in April 2004 ahead of a planning application for a wind turbine and associated works. All the NMRS structural sites in the area were identified. The Dale of Redland enclosure (HY31NE 28) is an upland sub-circular enclosure; tree planting has avoided the enclosure, which is defined by a bank up to 1m high and up to 12m diameter, though without a clear entrance. The sloping interior contains two circular features, which might be small hut remains.

Report to be lodged with Orkney SMR and the NMRS.

Field Visit (14 September 1993)

This bowl-shaped mound was visited during the course of the Orkney Barrows Project. It measured 9.0m by 7.0m and 0.45m in height. It is visible to the SW and NW for at least 500m and for less than 100m to the W.

Field Visit (17 June 2008 - 19 June 2008)

HY 3668 1703 As part of the MA in Archaeological Practice a group of postgraduate students undertook a survey of a range of features around Redland Farm on 17–19 June 2008. This included topographic survey and earthwork recording of a probable barrow cemetery (HY31NE 11), and standing building recording of a derelict post-medieval steading on the site of the modern farm (HY31NE 39). The burnt mound (HY31NE 10) was noted but no recording was undertaken.
