Archaeology Notes

NT24NW 70 2223 4658

Two sheepfolds and a rectilinear enclosure have been recorded on oblique aerial photography (RCAHMSAP 2005) at Pratstile Rig. The northern sheepfold is circular on plan, turf-built and is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Peebleshire 1859, sheet ix) annotated 'Old Sheepfold'. It is not shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10,000 map (1986), which shows only the stone-built sheepfold which lies about 100m to the SE. Immediately to the S of the stone sheepfold there is a rectilinear enclosure, which measures about 45m from E to W by 35m transversely within a turf bank.
