Archaeology Notes

NT67NW 145 6336 7936

Situated in the tidal muds of the inner reaches of Belhaven Bay are the linear remains of a dyke, constructed by the Earl of Haddington of Tynninghame Estate some time between 1835 and 1850. The dyke was part of a scheme to reclaim low lying tidal mud flats and salt greens for agriculture around the bay. The western and southern edges of the bay were reclaimed, however the northern area was not successful and the dyke, made of large boulders, is still visible in the bay. The 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Haddingtonshire 1854, sheet iv) depicts and annotates the extent of all the dykes in the scheme and comparison with W Forrests 1799 Map of Haddingtonshire shows the extent of land reclaimed from the bay.
