NLO: Eigg [name centred NM 47 87].

Possibly on map sheet NM48NW, NM48SW, or NM49SE.

Lochalsh, Isle Ornsey, 6th Dec [1832]. 'It blew a tremendous gale from S to SW, the night of 28th and morning of 29th ult. The MARY, of Inverness, McQueen, was totally wrecked: most of her materials and part of the cargo (herrings) saved, but much damaged. On the 30th, several logs of American pine were found on shore at the Island of Eigg, and a mahogany escrutoir and drawers were picked up, also some ship's spars, &c. On the 2d inst., part of a vessel and two logs were seen passing Eigg. At Knoydart, on the side of Loch Nevis, the wreck of a green boat, several casks, and the stern of a vessel, having 'Greenock' painted on it, drifted on shore on 29th or 30th ult., and a great number of logs on the shore of Arisaig.' [Record received incomplete].

NMRS, MS/829/71 (no. 7041).

The map sheet assigned to this record is arbitrary, being derived from the reported sighting of 'part of a vessel'. The vessel may have foundered out at sea, possibly beyond Scottish waters, and it is unrecorded whether and where the wreckage was washedashore.

The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998).

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 18 June 2005.
