A watching brief was carried out in March 2004 on the site of a housing development within the Clayhills area, where brick, tile and pottery production is known to have taken place in the 18th and 19th centuries. Three trenches were observed, which showed a consistent picture of layers of dumping alternating with relatively clean layers of gravel. It is possible that this was dumping into pits dug to exploit the clay beds, but there was no clear evidence to demonstrate this.
