Field Visit (4 December 2012)

NN 1755 8811 A walkover survey was carried out on 4 December 2012 in advance of the proposed construction of an Archimedean screw hydro-electric scheme at Achnacarry. The site is currently occupied by an existing hydro-electric plant, which in turn appears to stand on, or close to, the site of earlier industrial features, including one or more mills and a possible iron working site. This reuse has led to considerable disturbance and individual features and landscaping could not be attributed to identifiable phases.

Standing Building Recording (7 January 2015 - 30 January 2015)

NN 17516 88081 (centred on) The site of an old saw mill and other industrial type buildings associated with Achnacarry House were investigated and standing buildings were recorded, 7–30 January 2015, ahead of construction of a new hydro-electric scheme. Several buildings were recorded including a mill pond with sluice, race and lade. The remains of the mill were planned and an associated wooden timber building was also photographed and planned. Other buildings on the site were of recent date including a bridge constructed by 59 Commando Squadron in 2013.
