Archaeology Notes

NG54SE 8001 unlocated

NLO: Isle of Raasay [name centred NG 56 41]

Sound of Raasay [name centred NG 55 55].

Not to be confused with NG83SW 8002.

Possibly on map sheets NG53NW, NG53NE, NG54NE, NG54SW, NG55SE, or NG65SW.

The ANN, Hurd, from Petersburg to Bristol, was totally wrecked on the 16th instant, on the Island of Raysay [presumably Raasay]. Cargo expected to be saved.

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 5649, London, Friday November 30 1821.

NMRS, MS/829/71 (no. 6133).

(No classification or cargo specified: date of loss cited as 16 November 1821). Ann: this vessel was wrecked on the Island of Raysay (Raasay?) Capt. Hurd. Petersburg - Bristol.

(Location of loss cited as N57 25.0 W6 0.0).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The map sheet assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. It remains unclear whereabouts on this extensive island the vessel was lost.

The equation of Raysay with Raasay is accepted.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 8 March 2005.
