Archaeology Notes

ND34SW 361 ND 34184 44806

All that is now visible of this farmstead is a length of well-preserved stone wall on the NNW side of a cluster of modern wooden and corrugated iron buildings about 250m W of Burnt Hill. The farmstead is depicted roofed on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1877, sheet xxix), at which time it comprised a single building standing on the SSE side of a small garden. The second edition of the map (1907, sheet xxix) shows two buildings parallel to one another on an ENE and WSW alignment, but it is not clear whether one of these buildings was the one shown on the earlier map or whether they represent two new buildings; the surviving length of wall is likely to belong to the northern.
