Archaeology Notes

ND34SW 217 33962 44878

This quarry, which is situated 220m NNW of the former school at Gansclet, has been filled in and its site is now marked by a growth of weeds that spreads from the edge of a cultivated field into a private garden. As depicted on both the 1st and 2nd editions of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1877, sheet xxix; 1907, sheet xxix) the quarry measured about 47m from N to S by 16m transversely. It had gone out of use by the beginning of the 20th century and is annotated 'Old Quarry' on the later map.
