Archaeology Notes

ND34SW 211 33499 44536

This quarry, which is situated about 210m SE of Thrumster Church, is very heavily overgrown with rank gorse and its exact dimensions could not be recorded on the date of visit. The SE end of the quarry is depicted on the 1st and 2nd editions of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1877, sheet xxix; 1907, sheet xxix), but this part has been filled in and is now crossed by the access track to Gansclett farmsteading (ND 3361 4439). The NW end, which is still open, measures about 17m across and represents an extension excavated sometime after 1905. Nothing is now visible of the rectangular enclosure (ND34SW 438) that stood immediately SE of the quarry and is depicted on the 1st edition of the map.
