Archaeology Notes

ND34SW 202 33259 44146

This disused quarry is situated within a cultivated field 450m NE of Borrowstone farmsteading (ND34SW 315). Roughly oval on plan, it measures about 10m from NE to SW by a maximum of 7.5m transversely and it has been dug at least 1.5m deep into the top of a low knoll. The grass-grown interior is now partly filled with field-cleared stones and boulders. The quarry is first depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1877, sheet xxix), but it had gone out of use by the beginning of the 20th century and is annotated 'Old Quarry' on the 2nd edition of the map (1907, sheet xxix).
