Archaeology Notes

ND34SW 201 33202 44217

This disused quarry is situated at the edge of a cultivated field 460m NNE of Borrowstone farmsteading (ND34SW 315). Roughly oval on plan, it measures about 33m from NE to SW by a maximum of 19m transversely; its interior is waterlogged and there is a low mound of spoil on the E side. The quarry is first depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1877, sheet xxix), but it had gone out of use by the beginning of the 20th century and is annotated 'Old Quarry' on the 2nd edition of the map (1907, sheet xxix).
