Archaeology Notes

ND34SW 190 32952 44161

This disused quarry, which is situated about 320m NE of Melbourne Cottage farmsteading (ND34SW 183), is now almost entirely shrouded in a thick blanket of gorse. Irregular on plan, it measures 29.5m from NE to SW by 24m transversely and has been dug to a depth of at least 2.5m into an E-facing slope. The entrance to the quarry is at its SE corner.

The quarry is depicted on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1907, sheet xxix); the 1st edition map (1876, sheet xxix) shows an open rectangle at this location, but it is not clear whether this represents an enclosure, an unroofed building or, indeed, an early stage of the quarry workings.
