Archaeology Notes

ND34SW 188 32804 43975 and 32805 43985

What is probably a small building (YARROWS04 629) is built against the face of a disused quarry some 120m ENE of Melbourne Cottage farmsteading (ND34SW 183). The building measures 4.4m from NW to SE by 4.2 transversely overall. Its drystone wall on the NE and SW is up to 0.6m in thickness and 0.5m in height, but the NW end is formed by the sheer quarry face and on the SE there is no more than a low, outward-facing scarp. No entrance is visible. The quarry (YARROWS04 630) measures some 26.3m in length from NNE to SSW by up to 8m transversely and its exposed face on the W is 1m high. Neither the building nor the quarry is depicted on the 1st and 2nd editions of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1877, sheet xxix; 1907, sheet xxix).
