Archaeology Notes

ND34SW 179 32399 40701

The remains of this farmstead are situated in a field of pasture about 150m SE of Braehead farmsteading, but they have been reduced to a heap of boulders measuring about 10m from NNE to SSW by 9m transversely and 2m in height, and the grass-grown footings of a garden- or field-wall to the SSW. The steading is depicted roofed on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1877, sheet xxix), but it had been removed by the beginning of the 20th century and it is not shown on the 2nd edition of the map (1907, sheet xxix). As depicted on the earlier map, the steading comprised a range orientated ESE and WNW, with a small building standing immediately to the SSW of the ESE end. Braehead is described in the Ordnance Survey Name Book (Caithness No. 13, p. 283) as 'Two Crofter's dwellings occupied by Ann Miller and G Horne, the property of A Sharpe, of Clyth'.
