Archaeology Notes

ND34SW 168 33487 42414

This gravel-pit, which is still in use, is situated immediately E of the rough track that climbs the E flank of the Hill of Ulbster, some 350m N of Mains of Ulbster farmsteading (ND34SW 304). Irregular on plan, with an entrance on the SW, the pit measures about 42m from N to S by 26m transversely and about 3m in depth at its centre. The pit had not been opened when the area was recorded on an RAF vertical aerial photograph taken on 27th June 1947 (CPE/SCOT/UK/225, print 3157).
