Archaeology Notes

HY60NW 8008 unlocated

NLO: Deerness [name centred HY 567 067].

Possibly on map sheets HY50NW, or HY50SE.

See also HY62SE 8015.

Not to be confused with HY50NE 8007.

Kirkwall, 19th Dec. A nameboard, marked 'MARGARET ALLAN', has been washed on shore at Stronsay, and another marked 'HANNAH' at Deerness.

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 14,577, London, Saturday December 22 1860.

NMRS, MS/829/72 (no. 9996).

(No classification or cargo specified: date of loss cited as 15 December 1860). Hannah: nameboard at Deerness.

(Location of loss cited as N58 57 W2 41).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The map sheet assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary, being derived from the reported location of discovery of the nameboard. The date cited is presumably that of report or discovery, rather than loss.

The vessel may have foundered beyond Scottish waters.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 17 February 2005.
