Archaeology Notes

ND49SW 27.05 40441 92582 and 40461 92571

Two First World War concrete open gun-emplacements are situated immediately to the rear of the large enclosed Second World War gun positions.

Both emplacements describe a semi circle between two ready-use ammunition lockers.

One of the emplacements has been cut through to create an access path to the rear Wolrd War 2 No.1 gun position. The holdfasts could not be seen under a deposit of grass grown earth.

The remains of the rock cut trenches leading to the magazines can still be traced, the southern trench has been partially infilled. The northern trench has has several flights of concrete steps built into it and large amounts of stone revetting is in evidence.

The battery was armed with 6-inch guns.
