Archaeology Notes

ND34SW 319 30951 44422

This disused sandstone quarry is situated on the N side of the public road to Brickigoe 130m NW of North Yarrows farmsteading (ND34SW 148),. Irregular on plan, it measures 47m from NNW to SSE by up to 38m transversely and its entrance is on the S. The quarry is no more than 1.5m in depth. The E end is partly filled with field-cleared stones and soil, but elsewhere the floor of the quarry is either grass-grown or exposed rock. The quarry is depicted on both the 1st and 2nd editions of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1876, sheet xxix; 1907, sheet xxix).
