Archaeology Notes

ND29NE 13 c.2977 9824

A light anti-aircraft gun emplacement has been identified from RAF vertical air photographs (LEU/UK 4, 7031-7032, flown 17 April 1948), on the E-facing slope of Pegal Hill, on the E side of the B9047 road opposite the site of a barrage balloon mooring position (ND29NE 4).

Visible are what may be one large gun-emplacement with two other earth banked circular enclosures on either side of a track leading down the slope. At least two hut bases are visible on the photographs and there are two Nissen huts on the opposite side of the road.

The gun-emplacement is noted in Public Record Office documents (WO 166/7270) as LH 2 as being armed (November 1942), with one 40mm Mk I Bofors gun and manned by 59 Regiment.
